On February 16, 2010, our lives changed forever. We learned that John has advanced, stage 4, inoperable lung cancer. (He has never smoked a cigarette in his life.) It has spread to his spine, his pelvic bone, his adrenal glands, both eyes, and his brain. We were shocked when the oncologist gave us the prognosis: without treatment, the prognosis would be 1 month. With treatment, the median or average survival is 4 months. A really good prognosis, with treatment, is 12 months. He has seen some cases, however, where the patient has survived 3 years, and one has survived 7 years. The brain metastases are what make his prognosis so bad. We are hoping for a miracle, but we are going to accept the Lord's will in this matter. We have seen His hand in our lives, preparing us for all of this, and we are filled with gratitude for our many blessings. This is a blog to document our journey through this trial.

Where the Wild Things Are

So much good news to tell this week! On a recent weekend, we had Stake Conference at our local Church, and one of the General Authorities, or Church leaders, came from Salt Lake City to visit and to be a speaker. It was Elder Bradley W. Foster of the Seventy. (For members of the Church, you'll recall that he spoke at the recent worldwide General Conference. His talk was entitled, "Mother Told Me", in the Sunday afternoon session.) John and I were so excited to learn that Elder Foster would be coming to our home for a personal visit to us that weekend! What a wonderful, warm, humble man he is. He gave us each a blessing. This is a picture of us with Elder Foster (on the left) and our Stake President. It was truly a memorable visit.

During Stake Conference weekend, John was ordained to the Melchizedek Priesthood by our son-in-law, Travis. And we have set May 22nd as the date when we will go to the Chicago Temple to be sealed for time and all eternity to each other and to our children! The blessings continue to flow.

Last week John had a head CT scan, his first one since he finished his last radiation treatment on March 6th. Two hours later we sat in the radiation oncologist's office, endlessly waiting for him to come in and tell us the results of the scan. The wait was interminable, and we felt pretty nervous. We definitely had a bad case of what our daughter's friend aptly calls "scanxiety". (Spell check just freaked out over that one.) It was like waiting for the jury to come back. At last he came in and said all the spots in John's brain are "smaller to stable". Hooray! We breathed a sigh of relief, in unison. The tumors are responding, and will continue to respond for up to 3--4 months after the radiation treatments ended. He will have another MRI in two months.

In early June, John will have a CT scan to see how the lung tumor is responding to the Tarceva, the daily chemotherapy pill that he continues to take. His rash (from the Tarceva) flares up now and then. He has trouble taking the oral medication for the rash twice a day and has cut back to once a day; he thought it was making his nausea worse. He really struggles with queasiness and a poor appetite. Constant fatigue and lack of energy are also unwelcome companions that seem to have come to stay for a while.

We've been taking daily walks, though. Our house is right on the Capitol City Trail, and it's a beautiful place to walk, just enchanted-looking, with a real "Secret Garden" atmosphere. Our grandson calls it "Where the wild things are". And yesterday we walked in the University of Wisconsin Arboretum and marveled at the seemingly endless rows of lilac bushes blooming along the paths. We also went to visit Andrew in the Milwaukee area with Hilary, Jack, and Grace. And last week we spent a really enjoyable afternoon with my niece Kate and her husband Randy at their vacation home, Hill House, on seven wooded acres near the Dells. Oh yes, and we play Bananagrams a lot, to stave off "Chemo Brain"! It works!

We find endless reasons to celebrate, and we "press forward, having a perfect brightness of hope,...feasting upon the words of Christ" (2 Nephi 31:20). As Paul taught, God is the "God of all comfort, who comforteth us in all our tribulation"(2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

  3. How wonderful that Elder Foster and President Nelson visited you in your home! I'm so happy for that, and for the blessings you received. I couldn't be happier! Keep up with the blog posts- I love to read how you're doing. We continue to pray for you (did I tell you that Lane says "Please bless John" in every prayer- it's very cute). 5. Harvada, I am so grateful that you & John are able to go to the Temple this Saturday. I understand that there is very limited space and I want you and John to know that I will be thinking about you both, along with your children. I remember each time Ed & I were sealed to our children, how special it was. When you look into the mirrors of the sealing room at your beloved husband, know for certain, that ALL of your friends will also be thinking about your view there as well. Give each other a hug from me and know that I love you both and miss you both. Scout physicals are coming up, John! :-) Love Shannon Graves & all the Boys

  6. Harvada- my name is Katie Corry Eyre. I was roommates with Allison her first year at SUU! I loved hearing your voice on the phone when you would call for her. (That thick Wisconsin accent)
I heard of your husband on Allison's blog and want you to know how inspiring you are! Your words have such power and have been a big testimony builder. I'm praying for your family, but I can already tell how much strength you've found in your faith!

  8. I just checked in on the blog after having been "away" from the blogging world for a few weeks. I noticed that you had an updated post and was excited to see that there was new news since I last "checked in".

As I sit reading tonight I am overwhelmed to realize that it was today that you were able to be sealed. Your hope for a blessing of early temple attendance has been in my thoughts and prayers and I am so incredibly happy for you and your family! What a beautiful way to end my Saturday night...and an even more beautiful day for your family! What a blessing. Love you guys!

  11. Hi Harvada and Dr. Elisberg,
Although I felt Dr. Elisberg's friendship on each visit to his practice in Neenah I've always felt that I owed him the recognition for what he had earned therefore I refer to him as Dr. Elisberg.
I was most impressed with his compassion and the fact that he learned the habits, hobbies and aspirations of his patients. I truly miss those conversations.
Everyone who's lives he has touched are thankful for getting to know him and are now deeply saddened by his current situation. Dr. Elisberg is an inspiration to all of us in how he lived his life and how his faith allows him to enjoy his family and life in the most dire of times.
    Former patient and friend,
    Bill Countney
